The nursing profession has become one of the rapidly increasing fields in terms of development and quantity . The demand for nurses has enjoyed a great height and in response to this , a lot of people in the workforce have started to join the field

The decision to be in this field carries with it certain responsibilities and expectations

. In addition to this , there are certain things that a nursing student expects from the nursing school in to be able to catch up with other competitive professionals

Responsibilities towards the Profession

In the preamble of the International Council of Nurses , it was clearly stated that there are four fundamental responsibilities . These are a ) to promote health , b ) to prevent illness , c ) to restore health , and d ) to alleviate suffering (International Council of Nurses [ICN] , 2006 ,

. 1 It was also stated that the need for nursing has already become a universal need such that it has been recognized in every corner of the globe . It is among the professions whose services have become a need in every country and in every community

Going back to the four fundamental responsibilities , these are the umbrella responsibilities under which a lot of other things fall . These are the things which are included in the list of what a nurse should faithfully give back to the profession . These are the core values that should be held for they are the responsibilities towards the field Also , the adherence to the fundamental principles posed by an organization of nurses can be considered as adherence to a standard of the profession . First , the promotion of health will be ensured . This will be done in the course of duty such that the nurse would have to ensure that the health of the person or community being served is at the forefront . The nurse would act in accordance with the health guidelines to promote safety for the patient /s in terms of their health and well-being . Second , the nurse should also give back to the profession by preventing illnesses or the outbreak of such . As the old saying goes prevention is better than cure ' When there is the opportunity to prevent illnesses , it is the responsibility of the nurse to do necessary steps to prevent it from developing into a full-blown illness . Third the nurse should assist in the restoration of health for the sick patients . The nurse is not only a medical ally but the source of care and attention for those who are sick and in most need of health care and attention . Sometimes , the nurse has to come out of its role as a nurse and become the source of care for the patient that reaches even the level of care given by family members .
