Richard Rodriguez 's 2003 victim of two cultures : Richard Rodriguez film explores the experiences Rodriguez as he grew up in the USA . Being a descendant of immigrant parents from Mexico , Rodriguez explains that he lost his Mexican identity when he was first exposed to US culture . To begin with , Rodriguez explains that he initially was an exclusive Spanish speaker . Surprisingly , he now spiritedly advocates for people to be educated only in English

Through the film , Rodriguez also explains that he once took the drastic step of suddenly rejecting an academic

career that has a lot of potential . Although Rodriguez is a Fulbright academic who has earned degrees from institutions such as Columbia University and Stanford University , he rejected job opportunities that primarily stemmed from his Spanish lineage . Rodriguez however observes that he has an intense desire to offer instructions in the academic realm

Rodriguez further explains his dilemma due to the reactions that peers gave to his strange decision . He recounts of how some of his colleagues condemned him for allegedly forsaking his lineage . The colleagues who oppose Rodriguez 's actions hold that Rodriguez does not support bilingual education or affirmative action . He however observes that a great deal of his colleagues have heaped praises on him for his close understanding of how language generally affects life
