The artist sets a low price for the soulful portrait of a beautiful woman , but the child interrupts and asks for the largest price she can imagine . The painter explains the painting is of his late wife , a French dancer and mother of the young girl and so she doesn 't want to let it go at all . The man looks directly at the Cinderella , as if he can see her deepest thoughts and then gives her the price she asked . The girl is Cinderella (Reese Witherspoon ) and the film Vanity Fair ' centers around . Becky Sharp (Cinderella , the impoverished orphaned daughter of the French dancer and struggling artist .
