Many nurses are of the opinion that research utilization in the clinical setting is not a viable option considering the lack of time that they have . This factor plus other barriers work against a number of them improving their capacities to develop newer and better skills While this may be true for a majority , there are a number of nurses who have been able to pursue research and still be able to carry out their normal duties . The difference between those

that are able and those that are unable leads to an interesting theory of how the nurses can be assisted to engage in research . The pros of the active research nurses will enable a general pattern to emerge that can be applied across the board . With the successful implementation of this theory , the nurses will be able to perform their duties much better and the quality of health care would have improved

The material was picked on the basis that it concerned research utilization in clinical settings and that it provided solutions to the problems being faced by the nursing community . It included studies that had been undertaken to identify the barriers and the way these barriers could be overcome . The relevant material includes case studies of how some hospitals are rising to the challenge and assisting the nurses to develop their skills through research utilization and evidence based methods . The strategies that are useful for the successful implementation of this policy were also important considerations in selecting the source material

It is important to identify the barriers that the nursing community faces in their attempts to carry out research while in employment . These barriers can be grouped into intrinsic and extrinsic . That is those that the nurses feel are within their control and those that are out of their hands . The intrinsic barriers were easily overcome by active research nurses . This group felt that such barriers were well within their control any did not pose a serious threat to their studies . The extrinsic factors played a greater role in hampering the nurses in their quest for knowledge . In various studies conducted , the extrinsic factors that were identified included staffing levels , lack of financial support and lack of support from colleagues and the administration . The staff levels in the institutions were low and did not leave much time or opportunity for one to be released for academic studies . The work schedule is so tight that they to work overtime in most cases . This leaves them with very little time for themselves . Most nurses have no access to financial support to finance their studies . In some cases they still have loans from their professional training .
