The Use of Indian Mascots in Sports

In modern times the scared ceremonial dress and the ancient symbols of the Native American people have become synonymous with the mascots of sports teams throughout the USA . This argues that such usage should not be permitted in today 's modern day society , as it is immoral politically incorrect and disrespectful to this race of people

The use of images of Indian people as mascots has reduced them to a caricature type image

and appearance . The mascots appear as cartoons with the fans of the club often wielding foam props such as tomahawks and placing their hands over their mouths to produce a whooping sound and mimic Indian war cries . This is hugely misrepresentative and disrespectful to this ancient and traditional race of people Furthermore , it trivializes their history , tradition and sacred beliefs

A further issue with the use of images of Native Americans as mascots is the way in which they are falsely represented . People all over are being educated , via these mascots , that the practices and traditions of the Indian people are inconsequential and trivial customs that are there to be laughed at for a source of entertainment . For the Native Americans , face painting is highly symbolic and sacred and the wearing of feathers is a sign that one should be revered and respected . It is highly ironic that the people wearing such outfits at sports games are anything but images...
