BEFORE 18th century , most of the cities and towns in the United States had a total capacity of less than 3000 people : approximately 90 of the population lived in villages and small hamlets in the rural areas However , there were several market towns which would develop due to the needs of the surrounding villages most of which would be at least a day 's trek away from the village .
