Paper Topic:

understanding of human behavior

The psychoanalytic approach to human behavior is centered upon the framework of human personality . This framework divides human personality into three which are the id , the ego , and the superego (Benjafield 1996 . These divisions help me understand human behavior deeply According to the framework , the id represents the pleasure focus of human behavior which is present at birth (Burger 1997 . In observing newborn babies psychoanalytically , I am able to understand that their bouts of crying are always in to gain some pleasure or to alleviate some form of discomfort . This is because

at this early stage in life , the id is the only part of their personality that is present When the ego develops , they gain a better understanding of how to react to the impulses of the id (Burger 1997 . When they grow older , the superego is formed which regulates their actions in fulfilling their desires for pleasure (Burger 1997 . This why a child will not immediately rush out to the ice cream truck to satisfy his desire for a popsicle if his mother had explicitly told him not to leave the house The superego intervenes with the id impulses . Over time , values and ideals are developed by the superego while the id also develops more tastes for different pleasures . The ego strikes a middle ground between these two aspects . It is easier now to understand that certain human behavior may be due to the dominance of either the id or the superego People who are more restrained in their actions have a more developed superego while people who are less restrained and who are observed doing whatever it is that they desire regardless of the consequences may have a less developed superego or an overly developed id . The question is what factors play in to determine which aspect of personality between the id and the superego becomes dominant in a person
