Advancing in a retail career can be difficult in today 's competitive age . More and more employers are seeking to hire candidates with significant levels of education and experience . As a result , many are seeking new ways to get ahead . Professional development can be a great means for me to learn new skills , keep up with advancements in the field and develop a network that will foster tools for success

Professional development comes in many forms . The most effective form

It is important for employers to allow their employees to engage in a learning environment so that they can learn the modern technologies . This has a two-fold result , as it enables the company to retain me as an employee (IOMA , 2006 , saving on recruitment costs while I learn skills to give back into the company

Another important form of professional development is networking . My company enables me to network with others in my field . Attending conferences and trade shows , joining organizations and socializing with people in the retail sector can help me to build relationships (Daniels 2006 . This enables me to learn the successes and failures of other companies , and , as a result , I am able to learn from the mistakes and accomplishments of others without having to potentially make the same mistakes

All in all , professional development is critical to my success in the business world . I am well d with the professional development opportunities that have been presented to me thus far . I feel strongly that companies who take the time to offer professional development opportunities to their employees will only benefit from their investment
