Activities and Personal Growth

If anything , attaining personal growth is something all enlightened individuals should pursue . Regarding Diderot 's statement that Only passions , great passions can elevate the soul to great things ' he was making a highly accurate statement that reflects my own experiences with the Korean Red Cross as a volunteer

There are a number of ways a person can build character . A major reason that there is great variety in the means and methods that a person can build a great character is because different people react to different

experiences differently and their character can be alternately shaped for good or for bad depending upon their encoded reaction to the stimulus the experience provides them

The core part of all this , however , if one was looking for a common thread among all the different modes of experience , is the fact that character is developed by doing . In other words , a person will involve himself or herself in a particular activity that appeals to them and , in some cases , the impact of the activity can be so profound that it can literally shape and change a person 's entire character

Now , in to do this , the event needs to have a significant merit to it that appeals on a level that is challenging emotional , mentally or even spiritually . Playing a game of tennis is one thing . Training hours a day to become a champion tennis player involves a significant level of commitment that has the ability to transcend the character of the individual as he or she pushes human limits far beyond what would normally consider achievable . In other words , adversity breeds character , but adversity need not actually be something that is adverse

In my own life , I developed a great deal of character development and impact through my involvement with the Korean Red Cross . My involvement with the Korean Red Cross involved my investing time and commitment to various charitable causes . My involvement , however , did not involve monetary donations , but rather donations of my time in to help a person who was in a situation of need . Whether it be the sick or the infirmed at a nursing home or young children in an orphanage , I invested a great deal of time to make them feel and understand that they are not forgotten people and that there are those who care . The world is not a lonely place

For me , helping others is one of my great passions in life . It is not something that I did in school because it was required of me nor was it something that I was having a brief fling ' with . I am very committed to the ideals present within charitable and voluntary work . I am a believer that if a person does things that are good , good things will return to them . One such good thing is the enhanced development of growth that such work brings with it
