Since antiquity , humans have traveled and moved around . The primary motivation for travel was the search of resources food and water However , this search of resources was replaced by travel for fun and /or recreation . Henceforth , the travelers were referred to as tourists

According to Mathieson and Wall , tourism is defined as the temporary movement of people from their normal places of work and residence . The tourism definition has also been stretched to include the activities that the tourists perform

Accordingly , a tourist may then be described as an individual who lives his country of origin for a separate country which is the destination There are different motivations of travel , leisure , recreation or even business . However , this definition only applies for the person who will be away from their country of origin for more than 24 hours . Anyone leaving their place of residence for 24 hours and under is referred to as an excursionist (Mathieson and Wall 3 . In most cases , tourism is not concerned with tangible benefits rather the intangible benefits best described as the tourism experience
