's culture people are increasingly aware of their rights and expect products which are robust , safe and of a high quality For this reason quality has become a primary consideration for many organisations . TQM is not limited to the manufacturing process alone but involves all elements of the business model . In general three management systems are involved Organizational Management (OM , Human Resource Management (HRM ) and Quality Management (QM . This shall focus on the Quality Management element and shall address how the quality management practices in use today differ from some of the more traditional approaches
The assignment will also address the EFQM Excellence Model and consider how manufacturing companies can use this award as a benchmark for measuring and improving their quality performance
2 . Quality Management : A Brief Overview
The fundamental premise of Quality Management is the requirement to ensure that products are manufactured or services are delivered consistently right first time , free of errors and defects . 3 . Traditional Management Vs . Quality Focussed Management
Many of the concepts in use today in the field of Quality Management have been derived from the work of an America named Dr . Deming . Deming was particularly influence in Japan after the Second World War when he taught industries how to use statistical analysis and theories to improve quality . The basis of Deming 's theories was that companies should start the design of their process with a deep understanding of what customers actually wanted and subsequently design and modify their process with this in mind . This represented a significant shift from profit focus to quality focus . Accompanying this was a shift in management style . Whilst traditionally management had been target orientated , the emphasis changed and employees were given more freedom and empowerment to improve their own work processes and systems . Such an approach differed significantly from traditional management models that were generally objective based and thus termed management by objectives ' by Deming (Walton , 1990 .
