Common sense was a book that was written by Thomas Paine and published in 1776 anonymously .The book presented the colonist in America with an argument for independence in a time that the issue of freeing America from the british rule had not been raised .Paine put his work in a manner that even the common man would understand .He begins his argument in a general evaluation of the society and the government .He distinguishes between the

government and the society where he descibes the society as a case where people that come together to constructively accomplish something which can be said to be good .On the other hand the government is an institution which has been charged with the purpose of protecting the people from their own vices .According to Paine it originates from evils of the people .It has a role of protecting life property as well as the freedom of the people .The success of any government should be judged by the way it meets the needs of the people and at the same time the extent at which it fulfils the goals of the people (Liell , S2003 Paine goes on to consider then an imagined situation where a group of people has been put on an island and then goes on to be isolated from the rest of the society .
