The Hypothesis of the Primeval Atom (commonly referred to as the big bang theory ) as postulated by the Belgian Physicist-Priest , Georges Lemaotre , is one of the most important theories in science yet , it only gets a sort of honorable mention in most public high school biology textbooks . Is there any good reason why the big bang gets such a limited attention ? A proper understanding of this theory and its implications I believe , would have some consequences for the nature of scientific inquiry . The big bang is believed to have occurred some 15 to 20 billion years ago . Within the scientific community , this time is considered the birth of the universe . The common understanding of the big bang theory XE "Big Bang Theory " is that it confirms that the universe (all that we know to be matter , time , space , and energy ) had a beginning and it has been expanding since that beginning . So what ? What is the big deal about the universe expanding ?
