The epidemic of poor listening has been largely attributed to our society 's overemphasis on sending skills than receiving skills . Listening skills can be developed through the conscious effort of keeping in mind the intentions for listening . These intentions include understanding someone , enjoying the company of someone , learning something from other people and giving help or comfort to others .
