Communication is an essential part of our daily lives . It is a skill that we learn and develop through experience and interaction with people . Communication can be in a form of writing , speaking , reading and listening . Chapter 9 of this book focused mainly on presenting the effective ways in which people can communicate with others and it also provided important building blocks to effective listening

Part I of chapter 9 discussed the difference between hearing and listening . Hearing is merely an automatic and

passive reaction of our auditory membranes towards noise or sound . Listening is more of a conscious process of internalizing what you heard with attention and effort to understand or internalize what you have just heard . However much has been done to improve people 's communication skills particularly in speaking , but few efforts have been exerted in developing people 's listening skills . The epidemic of poor listening has been largely attributed to our society 's overemphasis on sending skills than receiving skills . Thus , it was explained in this chapter that listening skills is imperative in achieving effective communication

Listening skills can be developed through the conscious effort of keeping in mind the intentions for listening . These intentions include understanding someone , enjoying the company of someone , learning something from other people and giving help or comfort to others .
