the story `fences` by august wilson
Fences by August Wilson Fences display a way of life for the African American between the periods 1950 to 1965 , the odyssey of the blacks within the whites . The main character who is a garbage collector seems to have very many problems most of which are beyond him . He appears very determined in providing for his family . He seems to struggle a lot for fair treatment of the minority (the African American people ) but all seems in vain . He says that even the blacks should be allowed to drive the garbage trucks

The fence that Troy and Cory are building has different meaning to Troy and Rose . For Troy he is doing the wall so that he can detach himself from his wife and children . He says `some people build fences to keep people out .other people build fences to keep people in ' but Rose 's intention for the fence is to keep her family close together . She wants to have them all there and of them should leave . The fact that she grew up in a family that had closed everyone else outside even among themselves she would not want the same to happen to her family . So while to her the fence is to keep people close tightly , Troy 's intentions are the opposite
Troy seems to be also building a fence around him against the other players . He doesn 't get well with most of the actors most of the time He has differences with them including his son Cory . These two are very proud and independent . This complicates their relationship a lot and through out the book there are always differing until at last Cory walks out of his father 's house never to return . He came back when his father had died . Troy and Cory grew up in different times and perhaps this is also a fence their time difference
Troy feels that the African American should recognize and embrace their African selves . They should know their culture and belong to it rather than going outside their cultures boundaries (fences ) and copying or trying to live like the whites . He says `I think that the process of assimilation to white America was a big mistake
Troy 's treatment at the Negro League baseball team was another fence Despite the fact that he had a talent and could actually play well given a chance , but this couldn 't happen . He could not get to convince the racists that he would play well . He ended up being a garbage collector and earning very little money . Although he was not very well educated so get the best jobs available he still felt that it was as a result of being African American that he was never considered at the baseball . He knew that the garbage collecting job was for a certain group of people Those of his color . This seemed to hurt him a lot and he is seen saying `I aint worried about them firing me...
