Are you sure about this statement regarding a manager always being a leader

In my opinion , a manager does not necessarily have to be a leader . The two roles are different from each other . Overlap between the two is possible in the sense that a manager can have significant leadership ability , but this does not have to be the case

Kossoff (2006 ) states the difference between the two in the following way : Management is a career . Leadership is a calling ' Someone who was placed in a managerial position may not always have

this calling . In fact , leadership skill is highly dependent on the specific qualities of a personality that may have something to do with natural abilities to lead and motivate others , to initiate change and implement it

Leadership is about taking risks and being proactive about things . On the other hand , management is about the rational assessment of a situation and careful selection of goals and purposes the systematic development of strategies to achieve these goals the marshalling of the required resources ' and other process-related activities (Farey , 1993 br

.113 . From this it is clear that managers have a great number of responsibilities that do not require them to be leaders . In fact , some even speculate that a leader and a manager require two different types of personalities . However , this need not be the case : in higher levels of the hierarchy , the two types of personality can overlap so that senior managers can be both leaders and managers

Therefore , a manager does not have to be a leader . Involvement in organizing activities , everyday supervision of the business is possible for people who do not have the elusive leadership talent . In fact , each manager can develop his or her personal managerial style that will either include components of leadership or rely more on discipline and enforcement to get things done
