Running head : short novel by ane austen Sense and Sensibility : A Short Novel by Jane Austen Name of Client University Affiliation Jane Austen 's Sense and Sensibility ' is a short novel which was originally published in 1811 . It was not her first novel to be written but it was the one which is first published . Then , it has been published again and again throughout the century , which is most probably a testimony to the quality of the book . The novel used here is the 1998 edition published by the Oxford University

Press . Some critics would classify Austen 's novels as similar to the trashy romance novels that are being churned out these days , but Austen 's work , such as Sense and Sensibility ' is more than a romance novel . It realistically portrayed an early nineteenth century society and the status of women had during that period in history . But , the novel is not merely a portrayal of a society . It critics the society and leaves a lesson that many women may need , even during these modern times
Sense and Sensibility ' refers to the character strengths of two Dashwood sisters , Elinor and Marianne . The older sister Elinor has the sense ' because she is often rationale , sensible , and has control over her emotions . Marianne , on the other hand , has the sensibility because of her outward expression of her feelings , particularly her love for her ideal man , Mr . Willoughby . Elinor is in love too , with Edward Ferrars , but she does not show the intensity of her love . Then , both sisters suffered heart break . Willoughby went away and Ferrars confessed to a childhood sweetheart . The wide difference that the sisters dealt with their failed romances is the center of the story . And in the end the two sisters learned that to obtain true happiness , they must find a middle ground between sense and sensibility
The beginning of the book is a little bit slow , probably because of the influence of movies and television on me . That is , movies and television shows often begin in the middle of action . And so , reading through the of the small English town and the genealogy of the Dashwoods , Ferrars , Willoughbys , Brandons , and Middletons can be tough But , as one goes through the pages , the plot becomes more and more interesting . There is an intense drama being unfolded as the problems of Elinor and Marianne becomes complicated . The book is very well written and the lessons that the sisters learned are the same lessons that women , especially teenagers , must learn today . I would definitely recommend this book to everyone
