Some researchers believe that when some children reach adolescence their self-esteem drops . Adolescence can be a stressful time as adolescents face physical changes , start to form relationships with the opposite sex , are becoming more independent and so on . These changes can affect how the adolescent feels about himself . Concepts associated with self-esteem are self-worth , self-regard , and self-promotion and is different from self-confidence and efficacy . The development of self-esteem is influenced by one 's relationships experiences and thoughts (Kernis , Cornell , Sun , Berry Harlow , 1993 A person with good self-esteem feel good about themselves , think positively about their abilities and experiences and behave according to those positive traits . For example , it would be difficult to find a person with good self-esteem that is always cross and aggressive .
