The ratio decidendi forms a binding precedent , which will have to be followed by the other judges of the lower courts in future cases of similar facts It is very vital for judges to follow a precedent . This is because the acts of treating all cases alike ensures equal treatment and maintains the consistency of the law . It also becomes very easy for a judge to rule out a certain case because he /she will just apply the law to the facts of the case and then make a decision based on the facts of the case
