What is a Servant Leader

In any organization servant leader is the person who influences , models supports , and encourage other people for serving others first . Servant leadership is a way of life for personality development and pursuance of excellence in each and every aspect of life . Servant leader strives for serving the requirements and necessities of others promptly and proficiently , and he deals others with utmost honor , self-respect , and honesty

. The basic idea of a Servant-Leader is to facilitate people who prefer to serve first , and then lead as a way of increasing assistance to individuals and organizations . It is not necessary that a Servant-leader may hold any formal leadership positions in the organization . Servant-leader encourages teamwork , entrustment foresight , and the ethical use of authority

American Essayist Robert K Greenleaf coined the term Servant-Leadership in an essay The Servant As Leader in 1970 . Greenleaf describes the Servant-Leadership as

The servant-leader is servant first . It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve , to serve first . Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead . He or she is sharply different from the person who is leader first , perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions . For such it will be a later choice to serve - after leadership is established . The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types . Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature . The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people 's highest priority needs are being served . The best test , and difficult to administer , is : do those served grow as persons do they , while being served , become healthier , wiser , freer , more autonomous , more likely themselves to become servants ? What is the effect on the least privileged in society will they benefit , or , at least , will they not be further deprived (Greenleaf , 1970 Ten Key Elements of Servant-LeadershipIn my own reading of Greenleaf , I have identified a set of ten characteristics which I ascribe to the servant-leader . These include the following :Listening receptively to what others have to say ? Acceptance of others and having empathy for them ? Foresight and intuition ? Awareness and perception ? Having highly developed powers of persuasion ? An ability to conceptualize and to communicate concepts ? An ability to exert a healing influence upon individuals and institutions ? Building community in the workplace ? Practicing the art of contemplation ? Recognition that servant-leadership begins with the desireto change oneself .
