Introduction Since Orville and Wilbur Wright took to the air in December of 1903 safety has been a concern of

the aviation community . In the 105 years since that day there have been countless safety incidents

resulting in numerous deaths and injuries . Where does safety begin Who is responsible for safety in

the airline industry ? How safe are we in the air ? These safety questions among many others have been

asked by fliers every day that plane takes to the air

Events of January 15 , 2009

Recently the world

witnessed what could have been a major disaster when US Airways flight 1549

ditched in the Hudson River shortly after take off from La Guardia in New York bound for Charlotte

NC . The flight began like thousands of other flights on any given day in the United States . At what

point in this flight did safety begin ? As we recap the events that led up to the crash - we see safety

precautions are taken at every step of the way - precautions the flying public often refer to as a

nuisance

The passengers begin arriving at the terminal . Unloading bags from taxis and shuffling into the

huge terminal . Standing and looking up and down the concourse for the US Airways ' sign - directing

them where to go and check in . Loading all their bags as they made their way to the long lines at the

check in counter . Dreading the Homeland Security tables set up for checked baggage search . Hoping

their bags would...
