A scholarly writing is differentiated from a popular writing such that the audience of the former are most likely to be professors researchers , college and university students ' while that of the latter includes the general public (Characteristics of Scholarly and Popular Writing , n .d . With this , it could be said that scholarly writing are intended mostly for the audience involving those people from the academe

. This would now create a big role played by the audience of a scholarly writing

With the audience mainly coming from the academe , this would make the writer to adopt the value of academic responsibility . This means that there are more stringent rules in proper citation and the use of ideas from other authors . There are various citation styles to be followed according to the field of study . Examples of which are the MLA , APA Chicago , Turabian , and Harvard

Moreover , the writer would have to think of the level of complexity of words to be used based on the audience of a scholarly writing . Since it is expected that these people come from the academe , then it would not be appropriate to use colloquial words . The writer would have to adopt formal words and are simple and clear for the readers to comprehend Also , the tone of voice would have to be placed at an appropriate level meant for an academic discussion . As much as possible , it is best to stay away from using I , me , and other first-person references

Furthermore , the writer should keep in mind to place clear , concise and organized points within the essay which will make the readers comfortable in understanding the writing . It should follow general guidelines of writing as taught in English courses . This would ensure that appropriate formatting and technical notes are included in the writing
