CHAPTER ONE

Introduction

While the escalating trend of marital separation and rising graph of student violence , crime and unsatisfactory academic performance of the children from broken families as well as intact families have become pressing issues on their own , the thinking community of the society is now worried about the deep relationship between parental divorce and communicative behavior of the children , as

the link between communicative behavior of the children with the divorce of adults has now been substantiated by various study and research , where it even shows that the impact of parental divorce is as deep as to influence children later in their marital life too (Ambert , 2005 , save the instances of a troubled student life . And it does more harm to the society than it meets the eye - marital discord not only hits the children directly associated to it , but also hits the children of intact families , as all are placed together in educational institutions , where the hard examples of their peers influence them

This state of affairs makes it clear that this problem needs to be tackled at its nascent stage , i .e , in the formative years of such victims of marital separation , especially when they are students Therefore , moved by the plight of the children across the globe , this researches on the relationship between marital separation and communicative behaviors among students by systematic study of the issues involved in it , towards finding the answers of the research questions evolving out of the study . Accordingly this chapter introduces the background of the issue and statement of problem , besides presenting the research questions along with purpose , scope , significance , motivation and limitation of this research

Background of the Problem

High rate of divorce and Other Conjugal Separation

Increasing cases of marital separation resulting in increased number of single-parent child too . A 1995 report shows that "18 .9 million children under the age of 18 lived with single parent , of which more than half are the victims of divorce (Rodriguez , 1998 . Another survey done on 2002 , estimates the number of children experience parental divorce to the tune of one million (Kail , 2002 . Another report of recent times informs that the current divorce rates have risen to 50 in the United States (Divorce , 2006

However , another report on more current situation highlights the irony of modern times by stating "U .S . divorce rates have fallen to lowest level since 1970 , because more couple are opting for live-together (Crary , 2007 . It is understood , thus , data on separations in this arrangement would always remain elusive to the researchers and would blur the actual instances of families broken each year . Subsequently it is now virtually impossible to track down the actual number of children experiencing separation of their parents , which definitely stands much higher than the record
