Metabolic acidosis is a body condition in which due to pH imbalance there is heavy accumulation of excessive acid and inadequate bicarbonate to neutralize the acid effect . It

is a condition whereby there is disturbance in the body 's acid base , which may have been brought about by lack of insulin , improper diet and gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea and vomiting . Metabolic acidosis can result in serious complications of heart , liver and kidneys and occurs when the body excretes more acid than the base can accommodate . The term pH is used to describe how acidic or basic a substance is , and based on a scale of 14 a pH of 7 .0 is considered normal and the lower the result of pH factor the more acidic a substance is said to be , and a higher than 7 result implies a stronger base . Symptoms of metabolic acidosis include headaches , weakness and laziness coupled with loss of appetite , while in extreme cases the patient may become unconscious and if not treated properly may shift into coma or die . Metabolic acidosis is clinically confirmed with lab tests of the blood and urine .
