Radiation Therapy in Treatment of Cancer Patients

Advances in technology lead to the development of new techniques and methods in curing different kinds of diseases . One of these developments is the use ionizing radiation in treating cancer patients . This technique is called radiation therapy (or radiotherapy . To date , more or less 70 percent of cancer patients around the world

receive this kind of treatment which means it is used more often than other kinds of treatments

The use of radiation therapy (or radiotherapy ) dates back a hundred years ago . Wilhelm Conrad Rtzntgen discovered that x-ray can be used to treat cancer and thus radiation therapy was born . Decades later , this concept grew extensively upon the discovery of radioactive elements polonium and radium by Marie Curie . The era of medical treatment and research in refining therapeutic radiation has begun . It lead to development of new imaging technologies such as MRI (1970s ) and PET (1980s ) delivered more accurate results . Modern instrument used today allow medical practitioners to see 3D image of body-parts being examined

Radiotherapy is simply the medical use of ionizing radiation into a cancer patient . It is different from radiology as this only refers to imaging and diagnosis . It works by controlling malignant cells that cause cancer . Radiotherapy can be used for either curative (or adjuvant and palliative (impossible to cure ) cancer . Still , it is used for non-cancerous conditions but to a minor dose as radiation may also cause cancer especially in the parts of the body that are highly sensitive to radiation

My is about the use of ionizing radiation in the field of medicine . This pertains to the popular use of radiotherapy as part of any treatment process of cancer . As explained in the National Cancer Institute website , different types of radiation are used in different kinds of cancer and delivered in different ways . Each type is chosen carefully by the attending physician (s ) as any error might lead to worse circumstances . Many people are concerned with the possible side-effects of receiving minimal dose of ionizing radiation but they do not need to worry since there are control measures and standards being set when using this type of radiation . Doctors measure the right dosage by measuring the area affected by the cancer cells and also the type of tissues in the area . Doctors work with therapeutic ratio its prime purpose to maximize destruction of cancer cells whereas minimizes the damage brought to healthy tissues surrounding it

I chose to work on this since I am very much interested in the use of radiation in treating cancer and other diseases . I think pursuing a degree in the field of radiation therapy is a dream which I may achieve in the near future . I want to help cancer patients around the world by applying my knowledge in radiotherapy . I would like to show to everyone that radiation therapy is important as it save lives References
