1 . The purpose of the Sheriff in modern history is seen as someone who not only upholds the law , but is the law . The strangeness about this play is the way in which the Attorney speaks after the Sheriff and the ladies are offered a place by the stove . In this case one would assume that the ladies comfort is of the utmost importance and yet they turn down the offer . Most of the speech is taken up by Hale speaking . At times it

appears that he likes the sound of his own voice . The ladies sit quietly , as ladies should . The Sheriff and Attorney are not present as `buddies ' or `pals ' of Hale , but as law enforcement officers doing their job

2 . Minnie Wright strikes the reader as a somewhat hen-pecked and nervous woman who is possibly ignored enough by her husband to force her into irrational behaviour such as murdering him . She clearly makes no bones about the fact that he is dead and that she feels very little about it We gather the feeling that Minnie Wright may have been pushed beyond her strength and developed a stage of emotionless-ness where it made no impact on her whether or not her husband was dead . She also appears to be intellectually challenged in the way she deals with social situations
