Though the books ' story was rooted upon the death of the Chavez brothers and a dozen

other migrants , it was more of a memoir of the writer which takes us deeper into his experiences and insights as he came across the society that these illegal immigrants came from . He was able to magnify the reasons why these Mexicans would choose to leave home and risks their lives in going illegally to America for jobs that offer low wages and unsafe working conditions
Among the reasons that he cited is the lack of job opportunities in Cherbn . With a population of 30 ,000 , this city has not enough industry to employ its entire population . If employment is available , as the writer would put it , the low wages in America is 10 times more than what they make at home . So logically , they would choose the job that offers higher pay . They take jobs such as pluming , factory workers , packers grocery boys , strawberry pickers and other menial jobs . A quote from the book says "Where there are jobs to be had in low-skill , low-wage industries , sooner or later the Mexicans will be there (Martinez p232 . The jobs that they occupy are those that most local Americans would not want to apply to for reasons such as hazardous working environment , incomes below the minimum wage and low safety measures Though the Mexican government is aware of the reality of the situation of their countrymen working in the United States , they still hail them as heroes since they send 8 billion dollars annually to their families in Mexico . To date , their remittance is the 3rd largest source of income for the country and there are 4 .5 million estimated Mexican workers in the United States . That is a large chunk of the 107 million people in Mexico . No wonder why the city of Cherbn is becoming more and more Americanized each year . The author would say that as these immigrants would return home they bring with them American Cars with large stereos and bling-blings that are inspired by the black community since most of them share the same neighborhood
Though these people have left Mexico for greener pastures , they still carry with them their values , traditions and a few things that remind them of home . This is another point that was raised by the writer though they left their country , they didn 't leave Mexico behind . They are still deeply to their religion and that is the Catholic Faith .
