Sonnet 116 is Shakespeare 's definition of real and ideal love . It celebrates the intention of lovers who come together and invest emotions with the intention of being loyal to each other , never changing whatever circumstance or temptation would come and attempt to break the relationship . The second and third lines contain the theme of the entire poem : real and ideal love is one that does not alter when it

He also thinks that everyone should believe in the same thing and consider it as worth having in one 's own life

In the first line , the poet would like to promote this kind of love by expressing how he would not admit impediment ' to the union of true-minded people who decides to marry . This suggests that a good relationship is one where there is a mutual agreement between the two parties to get married . Unrequited love , however romantic and impressive the notion may be , would not equal the quality of a love that is shared because the emotion involved in unrequited love is one-sided Furthermore , a marriage of true minds ' refers to not just a physical attraction that may or may not lead to the love defined in the poem . It is supposed to be more of a spiritual and the meeting of people with the same minds ' or what is known as soul mates rather than one driven by lust

The rest of the poem is a series of imageries and metaphors which repeatedly emphasize the above stated point . However , the beauty of the sonnet lies in Shakespeare 's ability to create original pictures to illustrate a single point

In line 5 , the poet compares ideal love to an ever fixed mark ' or a mark that could not and would not be erased by whatever thing or circumstance . It will not change even when certain events or reasons arise that could make the relationship go sour . Love as an ever-fixed mark ' means that it could not be erased by the elements or removers . There are several removers ' which could bend ' the love between two people . An example of a remover is distance . When circumstances force the lovers to live far apart from each other , it is not supposed to change the intensity of real love . Another is illness Alzheimer , for instance , is an illness which makes people lose their memories and the emotions associated with their past . Ideal love is supposed to make the ill person feel something towards the other even if he or she cannot remember the past with the other person anymore . Still another remover ' is death .
