Because I could not stop for death

The first stanza withholds a of what the whole poem is all about . It signifies a ride or a journey with death . The mention of immortality seems to point out that through death and immortality are two sides of the same coin . While some mortals view death as passing away , the narrator seems to make an understatement that death is the same thing as , or can be equated to immortality . The journey of

death is then elaborated in the second stanza . As can be interpreted , the death seemed to be described as in `a slow pace . While in the third stanza the narrator is trying to look back at how her life has transpired

At the fourth stanza she described the chill the she is experiencing upon the acknowledgement that death has come her way . This chill can be tantamount to anxiety or fear . theless , the of her dress seems to be more appropriate with a wedding , thus it symbolizes a beginning at the face of an end

The fifth stanza described a house that reflects a comfortable place to dwell on . It figures an anticipation of something nice and comfortable Yet it also represents a deathbed when the stanza portrays the features of a tomb . The last stanza indicates how she feels now that the end has finally come . It seems that everything that happens in her whole life can be summarized in such a short recollection

Hill 's and Clifton 's poems

Hill 's and Clifton 's works were both about women . However the theme of Clifton 's work is focused on `dark woman ' indicating `black woman . Upon the mention of slaves , the author tries to tell the readers that there are woman that has done certain things and yet they remained `unnamed or unrecognized . Clifton kept on saying that women are left unrecognized unlike men . The choice of words is easy to understand and there are repetitions that somehow stress what the author is trying to relay . This makes the poem easier to understand since the theme and message is blatant but the power and impact is deep

Hill 's poem , on the other hand is vague and harder to understand because there are many allusions , metaphors and personifications all throughout the poem . While the subject is still about the hardships of women , the theme is more of dying without the rightful recognition . In this respect , the two poems are similar . However , while Clifton 's work focused on black and oppressed woman . Hill 's work is more of a reflection of how women are treated in general and how women act . It talks about the importance of women and how they are neglected
