Organic foods are generally produced based on definite production standards . Crops , to be considered as organic food , should not be grown using conventional pesticides , human wastes , sewer sludge and even artificial fertilizers . Furthermore , organic foods should not be processed using ionizing radiation or food additives . In the case of animals , they should be raised or taken care of without a habitual use of antibiotic and growth

hormones use . A food is classified to be organically grown by Government-approved certifiers

The U .S . Department of Agriculture sets the standards which should be strictly followed by all organic foods . As such , an organically grown food can only be released in the market if and only if it has the USDA Organic ' seal . In their standards , an organically produced product should have a minimum of 95 of the foods ingredients to be organically produced . The Government-approved certifiers give also seals of approval to products which have at least 70 percent organic ingredients . However the seal cannot be indicated on the front cover of the product . If it does not have the USDA Organic ' seal , then the organic product have not met the USDA standards or that any claim of being an organic product can not be products have the seal because the use of the seal is not compulsory

Evaluation of organically grown foods or products show that even if they are grown organically , it is still not known whether they are safer and more nutritious than the traditionally produced foods or products Moreover , if a product is said to be organic , it does not instantly mean that it is natural . Claims such as natural , free-range ' or hormone free ' can be seen together with the label organic , but these terms are not interchangeable
