Evelyn is central to the plot and appears on the screen quite a lot . She is rarely seen in interaction with other medical professionals , but acts very decisively toward patients . Still , because of her physical attractiveness , her male patients can view her manipulations as sexually meaningful . The director does not suggest , though , that this type of men 's behavior is necessary for nurse-patient communication . Evelyn is the embodiment of everything feminine in the harsh male world , and it is natural that men get attracted to her . She herself does not stay immune to Rafe 's masculinity

Although the focus in the film is on the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor and its effect on the lives of the characters , the relationship of the nurse with two friends is also one of the focal points that keeps the plot going . The nurse also proves to be the object of love for two friends who quarrel over her . But even though she is depicted in a sexual affair , the viewer does not question her moral values since she falls in love with the second friend , Danny only after she believes her first lover , Rafe , to be dead . She eventually gets pregnant with Danny 's baby , but even this twist of the plot does not make her portrayal sexually demeaning since she sleeps around with a number of men . Evelyn is simply a victim of circumstances that take her through the bloody war and make her destiny twist between two different men that are brought or taken away from her by sheer fate

Evelyn on the whole is an admirable character . She is young somewhere in her 20s-30s , single throughout most of the movie except the ending when marries Rafe to raise Danny 's baby together . Despite her young age and the grueling surroundings , being an intelligent and confident young woman , she appears to be maximally adjusted to the awful circumstances around her . She is sensitive to her patients ' needs and eager to deliver professional care to the soldiers . Evelyn clearly embraces the values of service to others and humanism .
