STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING READING SCORES OF ELEMENTARY POVERTY STRICKEN STUDENTS Introduction Early intervention strategies have been utilized in improving the reading scores of students at elementary level . This have mainly been class room oriented strategies or individualized approaches to assisting the students succeed . Unfortunately , little has bee done in tailoring programs specifically for the financially disadvantaged students . These students , besides having a problem in their scores , they are also faced with the predicament of poverty and it therefore follows that a special program should be tailor made to address their

needs . This research looks at the available strategies for improving reading scores and identifies or rather suggests a program that will see the students from poor backgrounds succeed
Importance of the to Education
The Federal Government has for along time been debating early intervention strategies to improve the reading scores of elementary students . The interest came to the fore in the 1960s when the Elementary and Secondary Act was passed kicking off writing and reading programs aiming at improving the reading and writing scores of students . Even Start and Head Start programs brought in the much needed early activity for the elementary students both in homes and at schools . The interest in elementary programs continues to this day and the Department of Education has been instrumental in calling upon educators and all stakeholders to tailor programs that will ensure the success of young children .
