br PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I am a counselor for the Residential Living Program for Homeless Youth where I help teens have a better life . These teens are primarily African Americans who have parents in jail , and as a result receive little adult guidance and supervision . I work directly under the Life Skills coordinator /GED instructor , and in this capacity I help them meet their basic needs , such as food , clothing , shelter , and also see to it that they receive moral and emotional support through counseling , life skills training , workshop and recreational activities , and

GED and secondary education support to make sure that these kids will be equipped with the necessary skills to attain an effective and constructive matriculation to independent living . As a counselor and mentor , I conduct life skills counseling sessions to find out their hopes and dreams , and to help them fulfill these to a certain extent . Our team help them apply for work helping them with job applications and interviews . I help kids get their GED , and talk to them to help them figure out what they want to do . I take them out to the movies , ball games , and to college campuses so they will have an idea what people their age are doing . Through this exposure they see that one can be anything one wants to be , that they can be just like these other kids , and even better if they work on it . I am proud and happy with what I do , especially when I see some of these kids go from being homeless , with both parents in jail , to having jobs and living responsibly and independently . If I go to school away from Atlanta , I will keep in touch with these kids to make sure that they stay on track , and to make them know that somebody cares for them
Aside from this , I am also happy that I have been able to somehow influence the diversity of employees in the Atlanta area where I work . I contacted the Latin American Association to establish ties between them and the company to promote Latin population within Eworks . After a year of actively pursuing and promoting diversity , I have half of my staff consist of African Americans and Latin Americans . we are starting to see other city managers in my company do the same thing after seeing the positive impact it has had in my territory . After all , our main goal is to reduce the serious under-representation of ethnic minorities , and by taking these simple steps we are able to effect some change...
