During economic depressions , Mexicans found themselves unwanted . Despite their contribution to U .S . economy through their cheap labor repatriation programs against Mexicans were launched to cut down on welfare costs

. In 1930 's , when many U .S . citizens were jobless , Mexicans were deported . Operation Wetback ' expelled 3 .8 million Mexicans including legal aliens . Few received formal hearings and the rest were deported without having any chance to defend themselves

In 1943 , prejudice against Mexicans was evidenced in the infamous Zoot Riot wherein whites brutally beat every Mexican - and Mexican-looking alien - they found . The police did nothing to hinder the savage beatings and the press even invited public participation . Sadly , the police and the media sanctioned the violence

The emergence of Mexican leaders - among whom is Cesar Chavez and his United Farm Workers Union - paved the way for civil rights organizations directed at the welfare of Mexican American . These organizations employed their influences in issues concerning Mexicans and their rights . Almost 5 ,000 Mexican representatives were in position as local public officials

Presently , Mexican immigration continues . Many of the central-city dwellers are still of low socioeconomic status . They are forced to live in areas where drug use and violence are everyday occurrences Apparently , many Mexican Americans still suffer discrimination and prejudice...
