The metamorphosis(by Franz kafka)

The Metamorphosis

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka offers opportunities for rich and clear reflections . This process of transformation , or metamorphosis starts when Gregor Sassma awakens to find himself transformed into a giant cockroach . Since this new persona was something unfamiliar to him , the story hence devotes itself to the adjustment process of the character . He refuses to be a burden to his parents who have toiled for him , and his sister , whom he has such affection for . Yet in this plight to not be a burden or cause of bother to his

society , it would be that same society that would destroy him . The manner by which Kafka explores and narrates the story of the character is very straightforward and often serious , which adds to the darkness of the novel . In fact , it is almost comic that the story is told in such dark manner , leading to a quite brutal and painful conclusion

There is indeed rich symbolism in this story . Although Kafka was not explicit in explaining these symbolisms , the story carries the message that the main character of Gregor has already become an insect , even prior to his transformation . His parents have basically seen him as but a commodity as they lead affluent and comfortable lives , with Gregor providing for them . When he becomes but a mere insect , they have no longer any use or care for him , and they would now move on to exploit his sister . Gregor has essentially even himself up to the faith of destruction , and the transformation to being an insect was just a confirmation of this status

The portrait that Kafka is painting is the characteristic of our society , which abuses the efforts of the majority of people . There are the privileged few who sit comfortably in their pedestals , yet they are doing nothing to deserve such privilege . The majority of people work long and hard hours just to retain such structure of the society People are in essence succumbing to this kind of setup , giving up their humanity , and in the process becoming useless insects

Kafka cleverly shows how innocent people are , as they would submit themselves to pain , neglect , and then inevitable destruction . For instance , when his fater took his money , Gregor merely recognizes the occurrence as a show of wisdom from his parents . This is true and clear irony , as Kafka delivers the message of piety being above intelligence as Gregor is blinded by his love for his parents . The parents represents the bourgeois class who abuses the society and guiltlessly lives a comfortable lives , while Gregor , or the masses , blindly submits themselves to such kind of abuse . Seemingly a comic tale of a family of an innocent individual , the story is a dark in its humor and unforgiving in its message

The work of Franz Kafka is brilliant and fascinating indeed , as it is filled with interesting narration that is serious and straightforward considering the subject of insects and transformations . Yet the story is immensely profound as it...
