Anorexia-like appearances form the definition of beauty in our popular media these days . It seems that in the United States every fashionable woman 's magazine has a 10 quick ways to loose weight faster ' article of the month . One of the problems of determining whether media images have a concrete influence on our own body image revolves around the fact that no particular theory can explain why some people appear affected by media , while others are not . For example , the psychological theory of social learning indicates that humans learn through the imitation of others . Thus if we imitate what we see in the media , we should all have picture perfect bodies This however does not happen . What does occur in place is a general dissatisfaction with our bodies . This frame of thought leads us to have negative thoughts about our own figures , or as stated before , body dissatisfaction .
