Take for example the case in the American society , their large community still have not yet legalize a single , official language thus their society is proposing a legislation to mandate English as their official language . However , this proposal is still being questioned by the law committee and legislators of America because of its pro 's and con 's

Amending English as the official language is said to impose certain advantages to the American society such as developing a unified medium of communication for the whole society . Also , this imposing is also said to provide support for the international relations of the America in aspects such as tourism , immigration and economic trade . Another is its aid for the adaptation of the immigrants to the social system of the American society because of the similarity of language with most of the international population . However , though the picture of the American society having the international language as their official one seems to provide a clear and advantageous condition , this proposal still has its own negative aspects for the American society

Since the American society is known to be comprised of diverse minority culture , having one official language means the eradication of language minority thus eliminating the minority culture that has been preserve by these people over many years . Another is the challenge of bilingualism for the part of the society that does not speak English natively Because these people need to adapt to the new language , their productivity and personal business will be rendered inactive over some period due to their inability to communicate in the said proposed official language . Another is the complexity and itself of the English language due to its numerous words (600 , 000 definitions ) and its intricate grammar rules

However , the most complicated effect of officiating English as the primary language in America is its impact on the political system of the government (Fois , 1996 . Since most of the documents and forms of the government accommodate cultural diversity , its language is also based on the primary language within its effective region .
