about my major and experience about major
Prompt 1 It is my goal to major in Linguistics while attending UC . My interest in the study of language first struck me when I came to the United States to attend an English language course for a year in 2008 . During my time I met students from various parts of the world , including : France Turkey , Brazil , Spain , Japan , and China . While interacting with students from diverse backgrounds and cultures , I was captivated by the ways in which language influences culture and the ways in which culture influences language . Although we all

spoke English to communicate with one another , our pronunciations of our English words was vastly different based on our own language and culture . There were times when I was quite confused when non-Asian students confronted me in direct manners . Apparently this was acceptable in their culture , but it would have been considered impolite and out of line in my Asian culture . It was also difficult for me to answer negative interrogatives because I was used to answering from the questioner 's perspective unlike in English where the answer is given from the respondent 's perspective . I realized that language is not something that can be translated word to word , but a medium through which you express your ideas to reveal how you speak and how you live . Since this experience , I have become fascinated by cultural context in which languages develop and I hope to continue pursuing this interest as Linguistics major
