Running Head : Motivation of Police Officers Risk , Danger , Excitement are the basic characteristics of a Police Job . Sometimes it 's a mixed combination of compassion for needy and decision making to resolve crisis . Many times the Job involves mental work rather than the physical tendencies . The urge to face challenges has to come from the attitude and heart , not just by the norms . A Police Officer can be posted onto a risky project , but the level of his /her involvement is purely dependent on the levels of motivation to do the job . Because

many times the police officer job nature involves the life threatening situations like Gun Crime , Anti-Social behavior Diss , Abandoned Cars and Luggage Vandalism , etc , Police officers often deal with criminal , hostile environment with non-cooperative individuals . Under such difference competencies , it becomes a unique concern for the Police supervisors to motivate their staff to enforce law in a successful manner . That 's the reasons the Police Management or Supervisors deal with the challenging task keeping good quality officers within their agency . Supervisors can motivate their officers to an extent to enforce law . But the officers need to learn to keep themselves motivated as well others in to perform to the standards on a daily basis
The managers ' task in motivating employees is to take responsibility for solving problems , responding to customer needs , cooperating with team members , and continuously improving services . Usually leaders /supervisors motivate the employees in two ways - One is extrinsic motivation , where managers tries ot control the effort levels of the employees irrespective of their actual will . This can be negative or positive by showing performance based reward or punishment . The extrinsic motivators include salary hikes and benefits , employment security , promotions , training opportunities , and better working conditions . Whereas intrinsic motivators include internal drives and values to be engaged in work But not every body will be having the same kind of attitude towards extrinsic motivation People with satisfied work life may not be motivated through them and people with strong head nature will also resist their bosses to show control over them
However , motivation and accountability has to be achieved by the police Officers and supervisors . A good Police administration will implement the motivating techniques that are suitable to the staff from time to time . And in some instance employee motivation requires job designing or redefining of the job that engage their interest and values
Though the promotional process is a commonly observed phenomenon in the police Human Resource practices , it has some problems when it is carefully not administered . That 's the reason the current study tries to observe different motivational theories to understand the procedures with newly hired and the Senior Police Officers
