From this glorious period was born one of the greatest artistic geniuses of history : Michelangelo Buonarroti . Born in Florence on a Sunday March 6 , 1475 , to the sculptor Lodovico di Leonardo Buonarroti , who claimed relation to the nobility of Canossa , he was nursed by one of the wife of the stonecutters there . Thus , even at that early an age , he was already exposed to the trade of stone cutting , and , as Michelangelo jested to a friend , that with the milk that he sucked came with it the hammers and chisels ' that was characteristic of the marble quarry where he was nursed (Durant 463 . In his youth , though taught to writer verse , he began to have a preference for drawing than writing and , mentored by Domenico Ghirlandaio , he wandered through the city-state , frequenting the fish market , and reproducing in detail the fishes ' fins , eyes , colors (Durant 465
Almost immediately , however , he was seized by the art of sculpting . The Medicis in the city had given public access to the art students of their garden filled with antique architecture and statues . When Domenico saw the apparent interest and skill by which Angelo copied the works of art he referred him to Lorenzo de Medici as one of the students of the latter 's school of sculpting . Lorenzo quickly saw the gift of the impetuous youth , and took him into the Medici household , treating him as he would a son (Durant 465 . He soon developed his sculpting skills and was consequently patroned and commissioned by the rich and powerful for great marble works of art .
