US and Native American Indian relations : Background

Native American ' or American Indian , are terminologies that are used interchangeably to refer to the indigenous people who first inhabited the continent of North America . Long before the Whites settled in North America , the native Indian tribes occupied it and had their own aboriginal culture and way of life which was radically different

from the white settler way of life and which would later set the stage for conflict between the two groups . According to the folklore of the native Indians , they have always inhabited North America . The most popular theory is that they traveled through the Bering Strait at a time when the Ocean had frozen over thereby providing a bridge for them between present day Siberia and Alaska which they used to cross over . This may have happened more than 40 , 000 years ago and as the millennia went by the native Indians adopted new technologies and cultures to suit the prevailing conditions .
