From its foundation by their first king , to the wars that it has been through , and until today , Korea might well be called popular . The Korean peninsula is divided into two geological parts , the north and the south . The two parts of Korea is divided by a wall called the 38th parallel . It is an imaginary line that roughly splits the Korean peninsula in half

Korea has been under the influence of different countries over the past years

. It has been under Japanese , Russian , and American rule to cite a few . The country has been fought over by the Russian and Japanese until they have reached an unwritten agreement where they would share governance over the country . After some time , Japan forcefully took over Korea . This move made the USSR and the US create an alliance to defeat the Japanese and reclaim the land of Korea . After the war , Korea was governed by the USSR and the US who have agreed that they would give Korea liberty after a few years of international oversight . Since the US and USSR have different ideologies , they have decided to split governance in half . The Americans took the south while the north was ruled over by the Russians . During the reign of the US and USSR , a transfer of cultures was established . The south learned democracy while the north learned about communism . As expected , the two sides of the country developed their own ideologies . Because of this conflict of ideas on how to rule their own country , the Korean War started

Cumings tells of the military and guerilla advancements and operations during the war . Through the book , he gives comments and insights from his own wit to some of the events and particular actions that some of the war characters have done

It is viewed from a modern point of view where the political economical , and cultural aspects are viewed with open-mindedness Although it is viewed from an American 's point of view , the book is particularly useful since it has detailed time frames that are divided into chapters for easier use . For example , the chapter titled Collision , 1948-1953 ' is a 61 page chapter about the happenings during the time frame 1948-1953 . It gives a detailed analysis of the Korean War , how it started , and how it finished

The Korean War , from what I have read from Cumings , is a war between two political ideologies that are much different from each other where one wishes equal rights among its citizens while the other wants a centralized powerful government .
