LEARNING PHILOSOPHY

CLASSROOM SETTING VS OUTSIDE SETTING

I believe that there is an educational gap between the realities of the street and the realities of the classroom . This being said , I believe that as much as educational institutions endeavor to impart philosophical ideas to students inside the classroom , I believe that something significant has indeed been lost . This is because as much as the classroom can be conducive for learning , the outside world can give one more knowledge . I have always believed that education should always strive to be sensitive to

the vicissitudes of social change Philosophers , or teachers , must aim to impart an abundance of experience to their students . And what better way to do this than outside the classroom , seeing the world and experiencing a variety of situations and seeing philosophical ideas through direct contact with phenomena and people . In the classroom , teachers more or less rely on contrived techniques , but outside , there is a greater chance of feeding the student 's curiosity through an active process of investigation independently pursued , which in turn leads through learning through discovery . There have been many great proponents of this type of learning process - from Piaget to Erikson , from John Dewey to Susan Isaacs . All these personalities found that cognitive functions can not be alienated from personal and interpersonal processes . They believe that optimal learning or education can be maximized through interaction with his environment . When philosophy is taught outside the classroom the students are able to bind theory and practice through the integration of the minute elements of their experience . When Socrates taught his students in the streets , he provided them a chance to see how philosophical ideas have become incorporated in their daily lives . It provided an optimal learning situation where philosophical ideas that were only once envisioned , were experienced . Since the students were shown daily applications or occurrences of philosophical ideas in motion , I believe that they are in turn , motivated to take these philosophical skills and further develop them . In the end , we have to ask ourselves why should we continue using the classroom if it , even in the most little way , act as a restriction to the growth of the human mind and spirit , when philosophy classes can be held outside where students can experience deeply learning experiences of their own where there is a enough autonomy , democracy , and imagination for them to integrate theory and practice
