Introduction

During the first half of the semester , I kept a journal of interactions with a 17-year-old girl called Jane that registered her thoughts , ideas joys and worries . This will present analysis of these interactions and analyze Jane 's psychological background from various perspectives

Meta-communication

In human interactions there is always a level that goes deeper than conventional exchange of pronounced texts that contain a certain meaning . This refers to the level of meta-communication as opposed to base-level communication

In our interactions with Jane , she always appeared

to be a somewhat cheeky , self-assertive teenager who often involuntarily demonstrated her real or assumed superiority to the interlocutor throughout the communication process . Thus , she often uses intonation with traces of arrogance . Besides , she frequently moves impatiently when the interlocutor introduces a subject she openly considers boring or not deserving attention . These bodily motions signal her attitude to the subject under discussion even when she is trying to be a good girl and is stating her interest out of politeness

Thus , her movements and attitudes convey to the interlocutor her attitudes towards the situation of communication that remains hidden by the words . Some linguistic devices employed by Jane in to express the importance of the statement include the use of sentence-final particles and filler words like eh , well ' etc . Jane coordinates her sentences on a temporal and rhythmic plane in to communicate her interest or lack of interest in communication activities

Jane 's Love Life

For four months now , Jane has been dating a guy she met in high school called Christopher . She is mostly d with their relationship noting that although he is not really cool ' as she would wish her boyfriend to be , he is nevertheless acceptable and makes a good partner Christopher 's best attraction is his passionate love towards Jane and willingness to go to every effort so as to her . Having had a very unfortunate relationship before , in which Jane had doted on a guy who later dumped her , she is now having a rest from passionate involvements at least those in which she would be the one to love . So far she is content to be loved . She made it clear in our conversations that she is aware he is not the one she will either marry or stay with for a lifetime rather , Christopher is a comfortable companion to be with for the time being

Drawing on Social Exchange Theory , one can argue that Jane is getting more rewards out of their relationship . Thus , when she went over to Miami in September , Christopher would wait for her at the airport to pick her up . When he took a trip to Chicago some time later on , she did not even think of being there to meet him . Thus , their exchange does not generate equal rewards , violating the equity rule .
