1 .0 . INTRODUCTION

When we gaze at someone or something , we look at[them]for a long time , especially , in surprise , admiration , or because [we] are thinking about something else (Cambridge , 1995 . The Chambers Dictionary (2003 ) suggests that a gaze need not be a long look [looking] fixedly ' at someone or something is also gazing . Therefore , a gaze generally expresses surprise , admiration , concentration or abstraction It reflects a mental consciousness or unconsciousness of the physical environment , and can therefore be deliberate or inadvertent

In interaction , we communicate with or react to

(Cambridge 1995 ) one or more people or things we influence or have an effect on [them] (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English , 1990 ) through our existence or through a close working together with them (ibid . Thus interaction is either active and deliberate , or passive and unconscious It , therefore , includes listening to or delivering an academic lecture corresponding with people through e-mail , physical letters or text messages , and verbal or bodily communication with an animal or a computer system . However , we can naturally gaze at another whom we can see with our physical eyes , in our dreams , visions , etc , that is through our visual perception

If interaction is communication or reaction , and gazing does not necessarily involve attentiveness , can it be said that whenever we gaze we intend to gain information about the person upon whom our eyes are trained
