There has been a change in the statistics of the minority population in the US . Originally , African-Americans formed by far the largest minority group in the US . However , in the year 2003 , this has changed and now the Hispanics are the

new largest minority group in the US . The Hispanic groups may not be considered as a single group that has similar health problems , values , beliefs and practices . The entire Hispanic population can be broken down into several segments , such as Mexican Brazilian , Peru , etc , and each of these groups would be having different problems and practices . Hence , it is essential that the US healthcare system take into account the variations that may be a part of this new largest minority group . There may be several reasons as to why the Latinos have become the largest minority group in the US . One reason would be due to great influx of immigrants , both legally and illegally Besides , the Hispanic population is beginning to expand in the US , much faster than any other ethnic group . The birth rate in the Hispanic group is much higher than any other ethnic group (Borak , 2004 Pefia-Brow , 1997

The US healthcare authorities rely on several sources to monitor the health status of the Hispanic population . One point , which needs to be kept in mind is that when considering any population , it is essential that the specific group to which the community belongs is recognized This would help prevent any chances of further confusion . In the past census and surveys , the US governmental agencies have been recording and examining data of each group under the common Hispanic population . This is completely wrong and is leading to a lot of problems in recognizing their health problems , beliefs , values , and practices . Major inconsistencies have been recorded in the national cancer registry Re-assessment has shown that the Hispanic groups have been frequently confused with Portuguese , Spanish and Italian groups , and efforts have not even made to separate out the Hispanic groups from the non-Hispanic groups . Frequently , the surname was utilized to classify the individual into the Hispanic group .
