Greek Mythology Pg .1 How did Hubris lead Croesus to destroy his Empire Croesus was the king of Lydia from 560 to 561 until he was defeated by the Persian 's in 547 BC . Croesus was famous for his wealth . It is recounted by Herodotus he was visited by Solon , who described him as the vain ruler instead of the happiest of mortals , like he expected . He dismissed Solon however the Greek was proven right when , Croesus misinterpreted an oracle from Delphi that a war with Persia

would cause
the fall of a great empire . Croesus , in his hubris took this prediction to mean he will
conquer and destroy the Persian Empire
He attacks Cyrus , the king of Persia , in 546 BC . The Greek scientist Thales of
Miletus gives another course to the river Halys so the army is not able to cross it . Croesus
arrives in Persian empire , and fights an inconclusive battle . Croesus attacks the Persian
king again the following year , however king Cyrus follows and defeats him on the plain
of Sardes . King Cyrus starts the siege of the Lydian capital
Help from the Spartans comes to late for Croesus and he is captured . He is taken
prisoner and sentenced to death to die on Pyre . He is later saved by Cyrus who decides to
spare Croesus life when he hears the story of Salon and his considering his mortality and
fortune . Cyrus makes Croesus one of his advisors
In other folklore , Croesus is not rescued from the pyre Herodotus colleague Ctesias
of Cnidus tells a different story about Croesus escape from death . It is not certain if
either are true , however what is true is Cyrus conquered Croesus ' Lydian kingdom
which was a great prize to win at the time
