by Stephen R . Covey presents ways in for us to achieve positive changes in ourselves and in our environment . He argues that , though there are people who achieved success in life , a part of themselves asks them of the personal contribution of their actions (p15 . Meanwhile , there are also people who have achieved emotional fulfillment but are troubled by their inaction to certain situations presented to them

On these issues Covey presented ways on making inner and external changes to produce effective results as an individual and later as a member of a community

Be The Change You Want To Be . This clichy is circulated through self-help books , organizational brochures , and even in t-shirts . In our society 's need for reforms , we always think of political , philosophical social , and moral revolutions . These movements require group actions and in times when very few have taken the lead for these reforms considering the immense number of people and institutions that need the change , the idea of a better tomorrow becomes vague and unimaginable Covey suggests that we start an inner revolution instead of dreaming for our civilization . Though we should always keep our idea for universal change within us , the best thing to do is organize first our own personal space

In the first habit he proposes the cruciality of our reactions and their reflection of our own character . The suggestion is for us to recognize our freedom to decide what and how to react to given stimulus Since these reactions can affect the way our environment treats us , such as our emotional relationship with friends and other people 's impression . Often times my reactions are affected by my current mood and this consequently affect my relationship with other people or the effectiveness of my actions . This idea relates to self-control , a virtue necessary for every person in their pursuit of personal fulfilment . At school , when something agitated me such as boring classes and inconsiderate professors , most likely the outcome of my proceeding actions and conversations with other people become less desirable compared to when I am in my natural mood . If will base my reactions on my goals , specifically on having a pleasant relationship with other people , my mood will not affect my actions toward them and the result would always be what I have desired
