My life has always been filled with numerous surprises . As a child , my parents would always make me see things in a different note . They tried to make my life as simple as possible , while still being up to date with the advancements of technology . I learned to appreciate the little things around me , without any complexities . One day , my mother approached me and said , honey , we are going to Utah

for a week ' She had her normal voice , but I felt the excitement overpower me

It was one summer adventure that I would never forget . I went to Utah with my parents to go visit a family friend . I was really excited to see them , for it has been years since we last saw each other . In addition to this , I also wanted to see my childhood friend , Nathan , who was relatively special . He was a nice boy , who was very good with the practical stuff . We would do things together , and I was eager to see my good friend , whom I have not seen in four years

As we approached the house in Utah , I was surprised to see that the once blissful family now exhibited sadness . Only Nathan 's parents welcomed us to their humble home . As we entered the house , I wondered where my good friend was . Normally , he would welcome me from the main door , and we would start doing extraordinary things together . As my mom and Aunt Jamie were exchanging stories , I blurted out , Aunt Jamie where is Nathan ? I haven 't seen him since we arrived ' Then she stopped talking and removed her dinner napkin . Then she replied , Sascha , I believe we have news for you . The reason why we invited you over for the summer is because Nathan has been asking for you ' Why , is there anything wrong with him , I asked . Then his mom stood up and said Come follow me . Then we went to the living room . Unlike before , the doors to the living room were closed , and sheets were used to cover the glass windows

As Aunt Jamie opened the door , I was surprised to see a hospital bed in the side of the room . To my surprise , my friend Nathan was lying restlessly in the bed . He had tubes to his body , and a respirator that helped him to breathe . His once brown and flowing hair was nowhere to be found . Instead , what I saw was his shiny , bald head and restless , thin body . I did not know what to say , nor how to react . I approached him , trying to control the tears that were slowly filling my eyes . Nathan is dying , YOUR NAME . He was diagnosed with leukemia when he was twelve . His determination to live strengthened when he became friends with you . I am sorry that we hid this from you , but he just wanted to see you...
