gender inequality in employment a comparative study of america and india oo china

Research Proposal

Gender Inequality in Employment : A Comparative Study of America and China

Rationale

This study would like to compare the rate and incidence of gender inequality in terms of employment between the American and Chinese workforce . Gender inequality is a reality , and although it may not be a positive concept , there is much to be gained on studying such an issue especially when it is compared across cultures . Cultural differences would dictate that the cause of gender inequality may be different in America when compared to China or that

workers themselves hold different perceptions and attitudes towards employment gender inequality . The aim of this research study is to examine the difference and similarities between gender inequalities in the workplace between two different cultures . The objectives of the study is to be able to describe how the concept of gender inequality in employment is defined and perceived by American and Chinese employees , to determine the cause of gender inequality and examine it according to the theory of collectivism and individualism . Lastly , this study would be able to contribute to the study of cultural differences in the workplace and hopefully lead to more researches and contribute to theory building

Theoretical Framework

This study will be using Hofstede 's theory on cultural orientation Hofstede (1983 ) proposed that there exists two opposing cultural orientation that each culture subscribes to , a culture can be collectivist or individualistic . Collectivist cultures are interdependent , social ties and the family is the most important aspect of an individual 's life , moreover , cultural norms and respect for authority is a way of life and the social structure is dependent on gender , age and status . On the other hand , the individualist culture promotes individual achievement , nonconformity , individual property and ownership and individual choice . This theory is a good framework from which gender inequality across two cultures can be examined . America have been identified as an individualist culture while China is a collectivist culture and answering the questions of this study can be aptly discussed using the perspective of this theory

Empirical Evidence

A number of researches have already been done using the collectivist-individualist theory or cultural orientation as such there is ample material to use for this study . The related literature can help identify the variables and the findings of previous researches and as it relates to the present study . These researches can be sourced from academic online journals or peer-reviewed journals as well as on textbooks . Employment rate or incidence of gender inequality can be determined from online statistical reports or records of the said countries

Evaluation of Theory

The theory is a good one , it offers a different way of thinking and investigating about relevant cultural differences and orientations , it has already been well researched and refined . A weakness may lie in how it seemingly categorizes each culture into either one of the orientations and may be too constricting when results may indicate a mixture of cultural orientations especially with the recent proliferation of western culture to China...
